The Man Who Breathed Sparks ☵ Sarah

friendof–fire:

Just as he was pulling his ragged sweater over his head, something caught his attention. A surly man was hassling a young woman. He was hardly surprised. How long had he suffered in his life, where all men were as ruthless and cruel as this one here? Even when he’d been dragged into Capricorn’s secret hideout, the home of the fire-raisers, he had seen Capricorn’s men hassling the maids too. However, unlike the maids, this one bit back as venomously as if she were a viper.

For a moment, the fire-eater carefully hid away his intrigue at how sharp her words bit into the man, just as she pointed him out and dropped him a few coins. Stupidly, he glanced down at them, and then back at the frightening man. He couldn’t help the frightened beat of his heart. Was she stupid? She was certainly going to get herself killed! And him too! Men hated to see their coins stolen by a woman, and given to another person. Before he finished the thought, he heard the snarl. Wolf.

Dustfinger spent enough time in the Wood to know the sound of a wolf. The brute of a man was not the only one with ice in his veins as Dustfinger staggered a few feet back. “She-wolf.” He breathed, his eyes darting between the wolf and the young woman who had fire in her heart. “I don’t want any trouble…” Please don’t let the wolf tear me flesh from bone! He knew just how to avoid a wolf in the dappled darkness of the Wayless Wood, but here in the market he knew there was little escape if it were hungry.

Too amused with the situation, Sarah was unable to catch what the fire-eater had said about a she-wolf; she was focused on the retreating, round form, of her would-be assailant. Laughing lightly, the woman removed the hood of her cloak from her head just to shake free her long curls. “Look at him go, surely, he won’t bother or bring any trouble around here again,” Sarah exclaimed while spinning on her heel to face the entertainer. What she found was that he had already been moving away from her.

“Oh! Oh, no. I didn’t mean to cause any trouble. I mean I was being accused of something unjust, I didn’t want to start a scene – ” her bottom lip was bit down to stop her from further explaining herself. Never did she think that the presence of her friend had also made him uncomfortable.

Sarah lowered the bowl to the floor between them and offered and then backed away from it. Aunduin stepped to her side after making sure that there was a great distance between her and the card player. It nuzzled her open palm and whined a bit at her coin purse.

Sarah lightly smiled and ran her fingers over his muzzle. While petting her companion, her sea-green gaze rose to meet the man’s countenance. “I apologize for the bit of noise. But, I really did enjoy your show. Sorry I couldn’t give more,” she spoke with a sincere tone and turned to her beastly friend. “As for you, let’s get you something to eat. What do you say, dried meats today? Some jerky?” In response, the lupine barked and placed a massive paw on her arm.

With that, Sarah stood up and smiled politely to the entertainer. The cloak’s hood came up to conceal her true identity from view once more. Thankfully, those elongated ears were hidden underneath thick, scarlet curls. With a whimsy spin of her heel, she bounced the coin purse lightly before clutching it firmly in her palm. Aunduin looked over to the man curiously before he too turned away.
