Dustfinger walked alongside her, unable to keep his eyes from straying to her wolf. It was true enough that he often preferred the company of animals to mankind, and this was no exception. The young woman fascinated him, but the wolf held his attention. “Sarah. Anduin.” He repeated after her, finding the latter a very promising name for such a creature. “I have a friend you might like to meet. He keeps company with a bear, and they wrestle to make children both laugh and coo in fright.”
Glancing on ahead, wondering where she was headed, he smiled. “I’m Dustfinger.” He answered, feeling her curious eyes on him. He could almost imagine them tracing his scars, like ghostly fingertips. Was it imagined, or did she really look at them? He never could tell with the way his nerves were so often frayed.
Just that moment, his horned marten finally made his return. Scurrying across the dirt, he darted fearlessly past the wolf and began climbing up his master’s figure, digging his claws into his rough clothing as if it were bark. When Gwin settled in at his shoulders, Dustfinger stroked his belly, seeing if his stomach was nice and full. “This is Gwin.” The marten’s tail flicked against his cheek, as if saying hello, but his beady little eyes were on the woman.
Intrigued, the woman pulled the hood back ever so slightly that her hair dared to spill out from underneath the fabric. Bright eyes widened when he piqued her interest, “You speak of another entertainer? My word, I do not know if I have enough coin to go around!” Gentle, lithe fingers, came to brush at his arm, playfully patting at him. Aunduin was looking between the two, but often found his cerulean gaze lingering long on the man walking at his master’s side.
She had been smiling all the while, simply finding his company already enjoyable. Most usually avoided coming close to this woman, she had trouble marked all over her. It was true, she was no demure, wall flower, she had fire in her heart and sharp tongue. But he, a man who she had just met, the man with physical scars, didn’t seem to mind her too much.
The life in her eyes indicated a bit of mischief, but it was concealed as soon as it surfaced when he spoke his name. “Dustfinger, peculiar name,” she chuckled and placed a few fingers to her lips, “I think I like it,” proclaiming that, the woman headed toward a few vendors, for the smell of food was difficult to ignore. “As much as I like the smell in the air, oh would you li –” Sarah stopped speaking when she noticed something running around between her legs.
“Oh!” Her cheeks brightened with rouge as Aunduin now began barking and nearly went underneath Sarah’s skirts to attempt chasing the marten. “Aunduin!” The commanding voice resonated so loud that people of the street turned to their direction. The wolf whined and then barked at the small animal now perched upon Dustfinger’s shoulder. For the first time in weeks, Aunduin’s excitement nearly toppled her over.
With a sheepish smile, her eyes roamed from the man’s face to the small creature. So this is what has the wolf all in a fuss. “Gwin, a pleasure to meet your acquaintance as well. I was just getting the formal introductions out of the way,” Sarah boldly stepped forward, closing the distance between she and Dustfinger. Personal space was never a concern to her, it seems. “I apologize, did my companion scare you?” She turned her head and smirked at the wolf, but soon enough, her attention returned to the marten. “What do you say, I make up for that and get you and your tall friend something to eat?”
