The price we pay

firstenchanterofkirkwall:

With the danger passed, as well as his rather embarrassing feeling that he prayed hadn’t been too obvious, Orsino’s mind returned to the offer she had tossed at him during his panicked state of worry earlier in the day. At the time, he was to preoccupied with what he had just finished to even consider her answer, to worried that he might be caught. But now, with half of the burden off his shoulders, quite literally, he was seriously considering her offer.

Outside of Kirkwall, his position meant nothing unless he proved it meant something. When he had accompanied the Knight Commander on one of her raids for blood mages, she had taken him to the Wounded Coast, where bandits attacked by the hordes, uncaring for the positions of the two. And, though he wanted to return to the Gallows to keep himself from getting into trouble, he also wanted to be give himself freedom, if only for a night, if only for several hours. There was nothing wrong with being selfish now and then…besides. He was going to find out what a High Summoner was even if it got him placed in Solitary.

Curling his fingers together, leaving his two index fingers pointed, he placed them to his lips and looked over at Sarah. “…Or perhaps we flee the city and you show me what you’re capable of?”

Already, Sarah was preparing herself to leave in order to escort the First Enchanter back to the Gallows, where she admitted, he truly belonged in. Dealings in the night were not for everyone, but several that preferred the blanket of darkness, found it to be the best time of day. Orsino didn’t seem like the sort that would enjoy running free through the shadows with her, to feel, to touch, to taste freedom without tethers binding them to their duties. She felt guilt, the same as the night when he found her, building within her chest. The ache caused a slight from to now cross her lips, draining her features of the light they once held.
But something changed just as she began to take her first steps, something in his voice. Sarah stopped immediately, given that her back was still to him, and simply listened. The dull pain evaporated like rain introduced to the torrid heat. He caused a bit of a familiar warmth to rise along her speckled cheeks as a frown was soon replaced with a small smile. “Flee?” Did she hear him properly? Of course she did.
It was then that Sarah turned to face him with a devious smile and a come-hither stare that hinted at dangerously pleasant ideas. With a defiant lift of her chin, she sauntered back to face him fully and met his gaze. “Are you ready for this?” Sarah didn’t wait for his answer and reached for his hand, clutching it firmly in her own. Fingers intertwined as she spun and faced the roads that lead away from the dock. “First Enchanter, I think you have won my heart by simply surprising me this evening,” she spoke in jest but her smile was wide and offered more than mere joking.
Whether it was banter or not, she already started to reel him closer so that they moved quickly and were not easily separated. The shadows offered a cool comfort that Sarah enjoyed, and with them both dressed in rich, dark colors, it was easier to maneuver along the walls without drawing the eye of any bandits lingering in the streets.
