There was no answer when she called, why would there be, it was two in the morning and most were asleep at this hour. But, what about those who were not part of the norm? She assumed they needed sleep like any other.
So she got a voicemail; Rune had been away, busy or asleep - what she should be doing now, sleeping. “Hi Rune,” there was a pause, a rustle, “I know it’s late, sorry, it’s .. it’s Sarah.. from a few nights prior.” More rustling took place, as if she was looking through stacks of paper. “I didn’t forget those tickets I said I would give you, if you still wish to go to the museum. Also, I have that sketch here, somewhere..”
There was a break. “I am going to dinner tomorrow evening, I was asked to join a few of the attendants at the show, if you want to stop by, please, let me know. Just uh.. give me a call back at the hotel, ask for room 745.”
He got the message the next morning. After one of his friends had panicked when some little critter had come out of an egg, he’d come back home and crashed.
Rune had listened to the message half asleep when he’d woke up, but it didn’t really dawn on him until later that day he needed to call back. He listened again and wrote the room number down, calling her back.
When she answered, she had just stepped out of the shower and nearly stumbled slightly before grabbing the phone. “Afternoon,” she said quietly, trying to dry her hair with a free hand. “Sarah speaking.”
Balancing the phone with her shoulder, and against her ear, she tried to turn down the television with the controller that had been lazily tossed on the bed.
